Antlantic ocean
Second ocean
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world (by extension). The borders
of this ocean are Europe, Africa and America. The Atlantic Ocean has large mountain ranges
(from north to south) called the Mesoatlantic Dorsal.
The Atlantic Ocean was essential, as an object of study, to understand the geological
past of our planet. These studies made it possible to confirm the expansion of the ocean floor,
legitimizing the theory of continental drift. In addition to this Ocean having great historical
importance, since for many centuries it was used for navigation and discovery of new worlds.

Characteristics
Extension : 80 000 000 km2, bathing approximately 20% of the area of planet Earth.
Volume : 310 400 000 km3
Depth : 3 to 4 thousand meters
Main currents : Gulf Stream; Equatorial Current; Antilles Current; North Atlantic Current and Benguela Current.
Even though it`'s classified as the second largest ocean in extension, the Atlantic plays the most important role, once an enormous part of the commercial flow depends on it. It is worth rewarding that part of the American coast contains oil (deep into this ocean) which is considered
a natural treasure.
The Atlantic Ocean houses a wide variety of marine species with thousands of species (fish, marine mammals, crustaceans, etc.).
Why is it called Atlantic?
The designation of this ocean comes from Atlas, son of Neptuno – God of the seas.
Atlas sauced the earth under his back. Atlas was a Greek Titan who was condemned by Zeus,
Poseidon and Cronos to sustain the heavens forever. Hence the association.
